Can AI Agents Replace Apps? What Changes—and What Still Needs an Interface

The AI Prism

Smartphone home screen crumbling into chat bubble

Updated October 22, 2026. AI agents can offer another way to use software: ask for an outcome instead of navigating every screen. That does not mean apps, app stores, or visual interfaces have disappeared. The useful question is which actions a service safely exposes to an assistant.

Actions are the bridge

Apple’s App Intents documentation describes a framework for exposing an app’s actions and data to system experiences such as Siri and Shortcuts. That is integration with an app, rather than evidence that the app has become unnecessary. An assistant can only act through the capabilities and permissions an implementation actually provides.

A request such as “find tomorrow’s appointment” is different from “cancel tomorrow’s appointment.” The first retrieves information; the second changes a commitment. A useful interface makes that difference visible before anything happens.

A practical workflow test

Consider a restaurant booking. A successful assistant must identify the correct venue, date, party size and price conditions; obtain an actual reservation; and return a confirmation you can check. Finding a restaurant webpage is not equivalent to completing that workflow.

Compare the assistant with the existing app on four questions: Did it finish the task? Could you inspect the details? Did it ask before a consequential change? Could you recover from an error? These are suggested evaluation criteria, not results of a test conducted by this publication.

Why screens still matter

Maps help compare locations. A calendar helps spot conflicts. A transaction screen lets someone inspect the amount and recipient. Natural language can reduce navigation while these views remain useful for verification and choice. Accessibility needs also vary; a voice-first interaction is not automatically the best interface for everyone.

For a software business, the practical opportunity is to expose a small set of reliable actions with clear permissions and useful status messages. Keep the conventional interface available for exceptions. Predictions about the end of app stores need adoption and revenue evidence; an impressive agent demonstration alone cannot establish them.
